Obedience Training For A Happier Dog & Owner

By Garrett McMahan

The word obedience often gets a bad rap, but when it comes to fostering a solid bond between you and your dog, obedience training is the best possible way to accomplish that goal. Dogs that are well-trained are happier and safer, and the owner, in turn, is happier as well because they have a loyal companion who truly enhances their life. Here are a few reasons why dog obedience training is essential.

One of the biggest reasons why we love having a dog as our companion is because they possess a joyful spirit and are always anxious to spend time with us. However, even if your dog is the sweetest friend you can imagine, he or she might possess a few destructive or annoying habits. For instance, perhaps your dog is an excessive barker or maybe they constantly chew up items in your house or greet all of your guests by jumping on them. Obedience training can stop these problems from occurring without altering the happy personality of your dog.

While you might be wary of dominating an animal, keep in mind that with proper obedience there is a huge sense of security. After all, how many of us have seen a dog running about without a leash, dashing down the road. Perhaps the owner left the door open accidentally and the pet dashed away. A well-trained dog doesn't typically escape even when a door is left open. In addition, if your dog will come when called and then follow commands such as sit and stay, you can keep them safe from harm.

Your dog not only needs to be able to follow commands at home or in a highly controlled situation, but also when there are other people and dogs around. The ability to control your dog in many situations will make him a safer animal. An added bonus is that because your dog is so well trained, they can be taken to more places and are much more likely to be welcomed at the homes of friends and family members. Thus, your dog will be happier because he or she can be with you as much as possible.

One of the reasons why people resist obedience training is that they don't wish to be harsh with an animal or dominate over it. Certainly, we never want to be cruel to any animal, but dogs need structure and this actually makes them happier. After all, the pack instinct still thrives within dogs and packs always have a leader. In your family, your dog looks to you as a leader and will follow your commands happily. A dog that knows what to do and what you expect is a more content animal. They love to please, and what could be more pleasing than a happy, obedient dog?

There are many dog obedience programs on the market and some promise results in days or perhaps a one-week cure. Just like Rome wasn't built in a day, your pet won't be trained in a couple of days. It does take a few weeks of patient practice to truly train a dog. So avoid the quick-fix programs, they don't work. A training program also needs to address many obedience issues including the proper way for a dog to walk on a leash, basic obedience commands and commands to keep your animal from barking or running away. A DVD program can be a convenient way to accomplish this training on your own schedule, so check out programs such as The Dog's Way, and you will be on your way to fostering an ideal relationship between you and your beloved dog.
